Why? Why are you doing that?

Recognising your purpose

New Year. New You.
So they say.
Choose that one resolution you’re determined to keep.
And yet 8 days in…
It’s all a distant memory.
Back to work.
Inbox overflowing.
The weight of workload crushingly heavy.
Whatever light relief came with Christmas has vanished.
------
I’ve tried to create and stick with New Year’s resolutions before. And I’ve always found at some point I fail.
Perhaps my expectations were too high. That I set myself impossible goals.
The disappointment hurts though.
So I stopped with New Years resolutions. They weren’t helping me.
And I just pile into the new year continuing on.
However, this year I’ve taken a short pause. Just a bit of time to stop and look ahead.
No New Year’s resolutions.
But I am thinking about what it is I want to achieve in 2019.
And it’s led me back thinking about my purpose.
My purpose as to why I do what I do.
Maybe that’s a bit grandiose?
Perhaps.
I’ve noticed that I can get lost in detail.
That on a day to day basis the daily grind can drag me down.
That I get caught in an internal battle persuading or forcing myself to do tasks or activities I’m fearful of doing. And this becomes all consuming.
That I lose sight of why I’m doing this.
------
So I’ve gone back to my purpose.
I’ve asked myself why I am doing what I am doing?
What do I get from it?
What others get from it?
What do I enjoy?
What frustrates me?
What am I fearful of?
What’s missing?
What do I want to achieve in 2019?
What's going to stop me achieving that?
What can I do to overcome that?
How will I feel when I look back at 2019?
Now I’m creating some tangible goals and ways to remind myself what they are and why I’m striving for them.
It’s work in progress, and for the next month I’ll be focusing on the theme of purpose for my blog.
