What's your mission in life?

Trying to change my way of working

I’m going to try to work differently. It’s going to be hard. I’m going to try to change how I’ve always done things.

I’m a deadline worker. I also prioritise the work I do on what I perceive as being ‘important’, which can be heavily influenced by the person asking.

But that can lead me into some stressful situations. When I make a commitment, I do everything I can to make it happen. To the deadline. Whatever it costs me.

And yet I can find myself putting off pieces of work. Big pieces of work. One’s that need considerable time and effort. I wait for the pressure to kick in before I actually begin doing anything, kidding myself that everything else I’ve done, had to be done first.

Why, do this to myself?

------

I’ve been reading and a number of books and articles that have described living by your values and principles. Using these to guide decisions. Helping to focus on what’s important. What’s really worth time and effort.

I like the idea, but it really work?

To do this I have to understand what really drives me. What is deeply important to me. What your values are. What my mission in life is.

Mission?

My mission in life?

The first time I read that I stared somewhat incredulously at the page.

I moved on.

Quickly.

Yet I know what I want to accomplish as a leadership coach.

I want to support and make a difference for people who are in specialist roles taking on leadership positions to become more self-aware, develop and use a broad range of leadership styles, build their self-confidence, create an empowering environment for other people to work in and build trust within their relationships, so that they become respected leaders an roles models themselves, and through their actions build an inclusive and collaborative culture and working environment.

And writing that feels good.

It reinforces my sense of purpose.

So is this enough?

Will this keep me focused? Help me say no?

Will this help me face the things I find difficult or which I’m fearful of?

Will this reduce the number of stressful situations I put myself in? Will I get the bigger pieces of work done with time to spare?

Will an approach on principles, change how I work or will I remain deadline driven?

I don’t know yet.

But I’m willing to give it a go see where this takes me.

What drives you? Are you in it for the long-game, or do you need to see success and progress each step of the way? Here I share how I'm driven by a desire for 'instant-gratification' and how that plays out in work.

How often do you get caught in situations where you can't say no? The pressures on and yet it's impossible to turn down the work you've just been lined up to take on. It's not straightforward to simply step back. Here's my recent experience of trying to balance that out for myself.
